Dhaka University students staged demonstrations on early Saturday demanding ban on politics in dormitories.

Students from different halls took to the streets at about 12:30am chanting various slogans like 1-2-3-4, hall politics no more, freedom or slavery, freedom-freedom.

The protests began as Chhatra Dal announced committees in 18 halls of the university on Friday morning.

Mohsin Hall student Nazmul Hasan Lanzu said, ‘Today July has returned to DU again. The promise of July is to keep the halls free from politics. But now both covert and overt politics are going on in the halls. We want to see the halls free from student politics without delay. To those who want to bring student politics back into the halls, we want to say, if you do not want to face the fate of the Chhatra League, then do not try to bring student politics back into the halls.’

Another student from Ruqayyah Hall said, ‘Those who had sent gifts to our hall we have boycotted. We believe other female’s halls will also take such steps.’

After ending the gathering at the Raju Sculpture, the protesting students took a sit-in in front of the VC’s residence and submitted five demands.

The demanded explanation from the vice-chancellor and the provost’s apology for failure.

They demanded that all existing hall committees including those of Chhatra Dal and Shibir must be dissolved.

If all the hall committees are not dissolved within 24 hours they will start a movement, said the protesters.
