The Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on Friday announced its new convening committees for 18 residential halls of the university.

Hours after the announcement of the committees, JCD’s Dhaka University unit formed a three-member probe committee to investigate and prepare a detailed report in response to various allegations of joining the organisation by hiding information by some leaders of the newly announced convening committees.

JCD’s DU president Ganesh Chandra Roy Shahos and general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon approved the hall committees on Friday morning.

However, more than 30 leaders named in the committees allegedly had connections with the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of Awami League, reports ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· DU correspondent.

The activities of Awami League have kept suspended until the trial of the party and its leaders over atrocities during the July mass uprising which ousted the authoritarian AL regime on August 5, 2024.

Allegations have surfaced that Mahmud Hasan, joint convener of Freedom Fighter Ziaur Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal, was boycotted by students in July 2024 for his alleged ties to the ‘Proloy gang’ and torture on behalf of Chhatra League.

Azizul Hakim, Zia hall joint convener of Chhatra Dal, was Awami League coordination committee member in Natore for the 2024 election.

Without mentioning the name of the party, former Students Against Discrimination spokesperson Umama Fatema in a Facebook post on Friday protested against the inclusion of BCL activists in the newly announced committees and termed it betrayal of the July uprising spirit.

‘If the committees are not suspended by tonight, students will take tough action,’ wrote Umama.

The Democratic Students’ Council, Dhaka University unit also held a press conference in front of Madhu’s Canteen on the campus on Friday afternoon.

Abdul Kader, convener of the organisation’s Dhaka University unit, said at the conference that without going public, Chhatra Shibir secretly activated committees in the halls, and most recently Chhatra Dal formed committees in halls, taking positions against the students’ aspirations.

According to the Chhatra Dal committees, Zahidul Islam has been made the convener of the 51-member Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall committee while Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim will lead the 44-member Kabi Jasimuddin Hall committee as convener and Monowar Hossain Pranto will lead the 47-member Surja Sen Hall committee.

The 54-member committee of Bijoy Ekattor Hall will be led by Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed as convener while Saif Al Islam Deep will lead the 54-member committee of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. Abu Zar Gifari Ifat will lead the 61-member committee of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall and Hasibur Rahman Asif will lead the 56-member Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall.

Tawhidul Islam has been made the convener of the 18-member Salimullah Muslim Hall committee while Ferdous Siddique Saimon will lead the 39-member AF Rahman Hall committee. Madhusudan Kundu Hrishikesh has been made convener of the 34-member Jagannath Hall committee, Mosaddeq Al Haque Shanto will lead the 48-member Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall committee and Abid Hasnat will lead 36-member Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall committee.

The 25-member Amar Ekushey Hall committee will be led by Asadul Haque Asad as its convener while Sraboni Akter will lead the eight-member Ruqayyah Hall committee, Tayeba Hasan Bithi to lead the five-member Shamsun Nahar Hall committee, Maliha Binte Khan to lead the four-member Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall committee, Naushin Nahar Othi to lead the three-member Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall committee and Tawhida Sultana to lead the seven-member Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall committee.

In the evening, DU unit of the JCD issued a press release about the formation of the probe committee, asking its members — JCD’s DU unit senior vice-president Masum Billah, senior joint general secretary Nasir Uddin Shawon and organisational secretary Nur Alam Bhuiyan — to submit the investigation report within three working days.
