
The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested eight leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organisations from various parts of Dhaka city on Thursday.
They were arrested from Lalbagh, Bangshal, Segunbagicha, Basundhara, Panthapath, Matuail and Uttara areas at different times on Thursday, said a DMP press release issued on Friday.
DMP deputy commissioner for media and public relations Mohammad Talebur Rahman in a press briefing on Friday said that the arrests were made based on intelligence report.
The arrested are鈥擝angladesh Awami Swechchhasebak League Dhaka South City unit鈥檚 Ward 31 former general secretary SM Jalal, 51, Dhaka鈥檚 unit level Awami League leader Md Shiblu, Cumilla district AL member Afzalun Nesa Hasan Baset, 45, Kishoreganj鈥檚 Kuliar Char upazila unit AL joint general secretary Md Jasim Uddin Liton, 50, banned Bangladesh Chhatra League鈥檚 Dhaka University leader Ashikur Rahman, 25, Dhaka North AL vice-president Mahbubur Rahman Hiron, former councillor for Ward 65 Samsuddin Bhuiyan, and Gazipur Muktijoddha Prajamma League president Md Mizanur Rahman.
The interim government on May 10 banned all activities of the AL until trial of the party and its leaders by the International Crimes Tribunal amid mounting protests led by student groups and political activists demanding a ban on and trial of the party.
Earlier on October 23 last year, the government banned the AL-backed student body BCL under the Anti-Terrorism Act on allegations of its involvement in breaching public security in various ways in the past 15 years.
