A clash broke out between leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the supporters of local government adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and National Citizen Party, after a rally was organised at Cumilla’s Muradnagar in protest at the alleged conspiracy targeting adviser Asif.
The clash began when several bricks and stones were hurled at NCP leaders and supporters of the LGRD adviser when they gathered for the rally at Allah Chattar at Muradnagar Sadar on Wednesday afternoon.
The bricks and stones were thrown allegedly from the direction of nearby Zilla Parishad Market.
Minazul Haque, convener of the Civil Society Group that participated in the protest rally, claimed that BNP activists deliberately attacked them.
‘After the procession arrived, they began chasing us and hurled at us hundreds of bricks in which at least six of our supporters were injured,’ he said.
Denying the allegations, BNP’s Muradnagar upazila convener Mohiuddin Anjan said, ‘Our boys only resisted after they were attacked.’
Amin Kader Khan, the investigation officer of the Muradnagar police, said that during the protest march and rally of NCP supporters, some individuals standing nearby began throwing bricks triggering a chase and counter-chase between the groups.
Mentioning that the police brought the situation under control, the investigation officer said that action would be taken against those who instigated the attack.
