
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday demanded immediate steps and exemplary punishment of those who had led attacks on a National Citizen Party rally in Gopalganj.
Mia Golam Parwar, the secretary general of the party, at a press conference at the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka, said that their party on Thursday held countrywide rallies protesting at the attacks.
The NCP rally was attacked by activists of the Awami League and banned Chhatra League in Gopalganj district town on Wednesday.
At least four people were killed and scores were injured in a series of clashes between members of the law enforcement agencies and activists of the Awami League and banned Chhatra League.
Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday organised the press conference on the party’s ‘national rally’ to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the Dhaka city on July 19.
The rally will start at 2:00pm followed by a cultural programme. Amir of the party Shafiqur Rahman will chair the rally and leaders of different political parties will speak at the programme, Golam Parwar added.
The central leaders of the party, Rafiqul Islam Khan, Hamidur Rahman Azad, ATM Masum, Abdul Halim, Motiur Rahman Akand, among others, attended the press conference.
