Jagannath University authorities have suspended three of its students, who are leaders of the university unit of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, allegedly for assaulting two faculty members and three student leaders of the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad.

The university authorities made the announcement in a statement signed by its registrar Professor Dr Sheikh Gias Uddin. The statement was issued Tuesday evening.

The expelled students are Yasin Hossain Saif of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (batch 2020–21), Abu Hena Mursalin of the Department of Social Work (batch 2018–19) and Imran Hasan Iman of the Department of Bangla (batch 2023–24). They all are the leaders of the university unit of JCD.

The authorities also barred two joint-conveners of the university unit of JCD from entering the campus. They are Md Mahmudul Hasan of the chemistry department and Md Zahidul Islam of the philosophy department.

JnU authorities also cautioned history department student Md Azizul Hakim over the incident.

The disciplinary actions came following the July 10 assault on the university’s student welfare adviser Dr AKM. Rifat Hasan and assistant proctor Shafiqul Islam as they came forward to save a student from being beaten by JCD leaders and activists on the campus.

The attackers allegedly also assaulted three BGCS leaders, terming them Chhatra League affiliates.
