The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will hold a rally in the capital Dhaka on July 19 to press its six-point demand, including holding the local government polls before the next general election and adopting the proportional representation system in the national polls.
Jamaat secretary general Mia Golam Parwar on Thursday evening at a preparatory meeting of the Dhaka city units (North and South) at the Diploma Engineers Institution auditorium said
that their party would hold a ‘grand rally’ at Suhrawardy Udyan at 2:00pm on July 19.
The holding of the local government polls before the national election would be a test for the Election Commission to show whether it could maintain its neutrality and ensure the level-playing fields for the political parties, Parwar said.
‘Moreover we also want that the next general elections must be held following the proportional representation system,’ he added.
Chaired by Dhaka city (South) amir Mohammad Nurul Islam Bulbul, party’s assistant secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka City (North) amir Mohammad Selim
Uddin, central leaders Rezaul Karim, Atiqur Rahman, Ehsan Habib Bulbul and Zahidul Islam, among others, spoke at the meeting.
