A US embassy delegation in Dhaka on Sunday appreciated and recognised the significance of the recent meeting between interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus and BNP acting chair Tarique Rahman in London.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury disclosed the information.

The appreciation and recognition came when the delegation led by US chargé d’affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson met BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chair’s office at Gulshan.

Amir Khasru and BNP organising secretary Shama Obaid attended the meeting.

‘The US envoy acknowledged the importance of the meeting between Tarique Rahman and the chief adviser. It was also discussed that the meeting has brought a sense of relief in the country and helped move things towards elections,’ Amir Khasru said.

He said that several pressing issues, including the US tariffs on Bangladeshi products such as readymade garments, the upcoming national election, and the scope for enhanced trade and investment, were discussed.

Khasru said that the BNP expressed concern over the impact of high US tariffs on Bangladesh’s export sector, indicating that the BNP was willing to work with the government to find a solution.

The discussions also touched upon the BNP’s readiness for the upcoming general elections and its commitment to support a democratic transition of the country, he further said.

Khasru said that the BNP was open to implementing reforms on which there was a political consensus and that the party intended to seek the public’s mandate on unresolved matters.

He confirmed that the party had initiated legal proceedings against former election commissioners involved in the 10th, 11th, and 12th general elections.

According to Khasru, the delay in filing the cases was due to restrictions under the past autocratic and fascist regime, but the current political climate has now made the legal action possible.
