The Bangladesh Nationalist Party expelled two local leaders in Rajshahi from the party for life over allegations of gross misconduct, including abuse of power, threats, and violent activities.
The expelled are Anwarul Islam, a member of Puthia upazila BNP and Rafiqul Islam, a senior joint convener of Baneshwar union BNP under the upazila.
A press release signed by Rajshahi district BNP convener Abu Sayed Chad, joint convener Saiful Islam Marshal, and member secretary Bishwanath Sarkar on Wednesday stated that Anwarul Islam and Rafiqul Islam had been expelled for life from all posts of the party on specific allegations of breach of party discipline.
According to the party insiders and local people, Anwarul threatened Monowar Hossain Mim, head teacher of Nandnapur High School, with dire consequences if he went to the school anymore, prompting the latter to lodge a formal complaint with the army personnel.
Following the complaint, the district BNP served a show-cause notice on Anwarul, they said, adding that Rafiqul Islam, on the other hand, carried out an attack on the houses of two army personnel in Hatinada village under the upazila on Monday after failing to extort Tk 5 lakh from one of the soldiers’ families.
Following the attack, the victim families lodged a case with the Puthia police station, naming Rafiqul as the prime accused.
Contacted, district BNP member secretary Bishwanath Sarkar said that the reply of show-cause notice served to Anwarul was not acceptable while there was a serious and documented complaint against Rafiqul regarding the attack on the army personnel’s houses.
