Joint forces interrogated leaders of the Students Against Discrimination and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party early Sunday about the attack, vandalism and arson on Jatiya Party chairman Ghulam Muhammed Quader’s house in Rangpur city on Thursday night.

The forces also sought their assistance in identifying the perpetrators showing video footage and images.

The army called Imtiaz Ahmed Imti, the city convener, and Imran Ahmed, the district unit convener of the SAD, to the scene at midnight for interrogation.

National Citizen Party chief coordinator for north Sarjis Alam also came to the spot at  around 1:30am and had a conversation with Brigadier General Humayun Kayum, commander of the 72 Infantry Brigade.

According to the army, leaders of BNP and SAD were shown video footage of the attack on GM Quader’s house so that they could help in identifying those involved in the attack.

Both Imran and Imtiaz were returning after filing a written complaint against GM Quader and former city mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa with the Kotwali police, accusing them and 16 others of assaulting and injuring their activists.

On their way home, they were called by the army personnel.

Later, the army called BNP’s Rangpur city convener Shamsuzzaman Shamu, member secretary Mahfuzunnabi Don and district member secretary Anisur Rahman Laku.

They were shown videos and asked whether any of their party members were involved.

BNP leaders reportedly identified at least one individual and promised organisational action against anyone involved in the attack.

Imtiaz said that the army had contacted them over the phone late at night and asked them to meet them at Payra Chattar of the city.

BNP leader Shamsuzzaman said that the army showed them multiple videos so that they could identify the attackers.

‘We have identified one and we we will take action if any of our men are involved in the attack,’ he added.

Sarjis accused the Jatiya Party for supporting the deposed Awami League’s authoritarian rule for the past 16 years.

He also alleged that GM Quader held secret meetings in Rangpur to help in reorganising the AL under the guise of Jatiya Party activities and accused them of instigating unrest in the city.

Humayun said that no one would be allowed to damage public property or hurt people in the name of protest.

Both BNP and SAD leaders cooperated during the investigation and recognised the people in the video footage and promised to bring them on Sunday, said Humayun, adding that they felt embarrassed and assured the force that such incident would not happen again.

Earlier on Friday night, NCP’s Rangpur district organiser, Alamgir Rahman Noyon filed  a written complaint with the Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Kotwali station against  16   Jatiya Party leaders and activists  including its chief  GM Quader, co-chairman and former city mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, said Kotowali police officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman.

Meanwhile, on Friday night a separate complaint was filed against 22 named people including SAD city convener Imtiaz and NCP organiser Nahid Hasan Khandoker with the station by Jatiya Chhatra Samaj secretary Arif Ali following Thursday night’s attack.

In Lalmonirhat town, unidentified assailants attacked and vandalised the Jatiya Party district office on Friday night setting furniture ablaze, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Lalmonirhat reported.

Lalmonirhat Sadar police officer-in-charge Mohammad Noornabi said that police went to the spot on information.

‘No suspects were found at the scene. If a complaint is filed, we will investigate the matter,’ he added.

Earlier, a group of miscreants attacked GM Quader’s house, vandalised parts of the house and set fire to a motorcycle parked in the house compound at Senpara in Rangpur city on Thursday night, hours after he had arrived in Rangpur.
