The National Citizen Party on Tuesday announced that it would hold a demonstration in front of the Bangladesh Election Commission office at Agargaon in the capital Dhaka today, demanding reforms in the Election Commission and initiatives to hold the local government elections.

NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain made the announcement at a press conference held at its office at Banglamotor in the capital, according to a press release.

NCP’s Dhaka Metropolitan unit will organise the protest rally at 11:00am today, announced Akhter.

He, in a written statement, expressed concern over the recent political situation regarding the Dhaka South City Corporation elections in 2020.

‘We believe that the biased role of the Election Commission is responsible for the situation that has arisen,’ said Akhter.

He accused the Election Commission of showing biasness.

Although the Election Commission sought the opinion of the law ministry regarding the appointment of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor, the commission published the gazette appointing him mayor before the opinion came, said Akhter.

‘It is not possible to trust this commission as the commission was not formed following the proposals of Election Reform Commission rather formed according to an act enacted during ousted Awami League regime,’ he said.

He stated that delivering services to citizens was severely hampered due to lack of public representatives.

NCP convener Nahid Islam, senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adib, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, among others, also present at the press conference.
