A new political party named Bangladesh Republic Party formed by various professionals, including former military officers, is set to be launched in mid-June.

On behalf of the party, retired Lieutenant Commander Md Mehedi Hasan made the announcement at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital on Tuesday.

He said that the party had been formed to uphold the ideals of the July uprising.

He said that the party’s commitments were to ensure equal rights for all citizens, establish a justice-based society, a welfare-oriented state, and sustainable good governance through social and economic justice.

Mehedi criticised the existing political parties and the interim government for allegedly deviating from the core principles of the July uprising.

He also said, ‘Fugitive fascist is fleeing the country with red passport, there is negligence towards the families of July martyrs, lack of rehabilitation for the injured, and attempts to politically reintegrate identified culprits.’

Retried Captain Md Shafiqul Islam said, ‘To many, politics has become synonymous with extortion, corruption and criminal activities. We want to bring about a clear departure from that image. No dishonest individuals will have a place in our party,’ he added.
