Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chair Tarique Rahman on Saturday said his party has a clear stance that legal action must be taken against those who have repeatedly violated the constitution, formed illegal parliaments or governments and breached the constitutional integrity.
At a Buddha Purnima greetings exchange ceremony at the BNP’s Gulshan office in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman virtually stated that if the BNP is given the chance to govern again, it would establish an all-party, all-faith citizen investigation commission.
The commission would involve civil society representatives to investigate the causes behind the incidents that affected religious communities during the past 15 years of fascist rule, Tarique said.
He said that the Awami League has lost its democratic character and has aligned itself against the country and its people, has already been labelled as a ‘destructive force’ by the public.
Tarique said that the democratic people of Bangladesh are united on two fundamental principles: no one should ever again transform Bangladesh into a subservient, dependent state and anti-democratic, fugitive and subservient forces should never be allowed to rule the country again.
He said the BNP aims to establish a democratic government in the country — one that will be accountable to the people.
He also stressed that none should be allowed to conspire to seize or monopolise the democratic political rights of the people, particularly the right to vote.
Tarique said that until a democratic government, accountable to the people for their votes, is established, people across Bangladesh, must remain vigilant and alert from their respective positions.
