Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chair Asaduzzaman Ripon on Friday alleged that a process of rehabilitating people from the Awami League into the current administration is gradually taking place.

He made this remark while speaking as the chief guest at a citizens’ rally at Shimulia Ghat in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj district on Friday.

‘The process of reinstating those who were once close to Sheikh Hasina and were involved in corruption is going on under various guises — often as special assistants to advisers in the new government,’ said Ripon.

‘Those who stood against democratic values are now being seen joining the administration of the Yunus government,’ he added.

Addressing to the chief adviser, he warned, ‘People from the previous autocratic regime are entering your administration by wrongly presenting themselves and withholding information. This is harming the image of the country and undermining the spirit of August 5.’

Ripon stressed that August 5 was not just about the fall of a dictatorial government, but about burying the very system of autocracy.

Speaking about environmental issues, Ripon expressed grave concerns over the widespread illegal sand extraction occurring across the country.

‘Sand mafias are pushing the nation towards disasters by carrying out unplanned and unlawful sand extraction,’ he said, adding that, ‘Rivers are disappearing, villages are vanishing.’

He called for both legal steps and a grassroots resistance in tackling the crisis, announcing plans to approach the High Court in this regard and to launch a social movement demanding the formulation of strict regulations to control sand extraction.

The rally, organised by the Louhajang upazila BNP, was presided over by former organising secretary of Holudia union BNP Kamal Khan.
