A Bangladesh Nationalist Party activist, who sustained injuries in a clash between two factions of the party over establishing supremacy at Badarganj upazila in Rangpur, died at a hospital on Saturday.

The victim, Lavlu Mia, 50, a resident of the upazila, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital at around 5:00pm.


Badarganj police officer-in-charge AKM Atikur Rahman confirmed his death.

He also said that they did not have any formal complaints lodged over the  incident till filing of this report at 9:47pm.

Atikur, however, said that the police were deployed in the area while the army personnel was also assisting in maintaining law and order and preventing further violence.

Our correspondent in Rangpur reported that the clash broke out between local BNP leaders Mohammad Ali Sardar and Shahidul Haque Manik around 11:00am in front of the Shaheed Minar in Badarganj Bazar.

According to local people, the incident occurred over a dispute between a local landlord who rented out his space to a trader who make his shop.

Landlord Ishtiaq Babu with his followers attacked Jahidul Islam, who rented his space and built a shop there, and vandalised the shop and looted its valuables on Wednesday evening.

Later, Jahidul sought the intervention of the chairman of Kalupara union and upazila BNP joint secretary Shahidul Haque Manik, while Ishtiaq sought support from former BNP lawmaker Mohammad Ali Sardar to resolve the matter.

The incident eventually led the two factions, one led by Manik and the other by Mohammad Ali Sardar, to lock into a deadly clash with sharp weapons on Saturday when Jahidul with his supporters formed a human chain in front of the Shaheed Minar, leaving 15 persons injured.

Local people rescued the injured and took them to a nearby hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Of the injured, Lablu Mia from Rajarampur village, Moktarul Islam from Bairampur village, Munna from Pathanpara village, Shafikul Islam and Maynal Hossain from Lohani Para have been admitted to RMCH in critical condition.

District BNP member secretary Anisur Rahman Laku told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that three, including Humayun Kabir, Shahidul Haque and Mohammad Ali were served show cause notices over breaking party discipline.
