National Citizen Party senior joint convener Samanta Shermeen said on Saturday that women’s rights and safety could not be ensured with any debatable law.

She also said that women’s rights along with civil rights must be ensured and legally established.

She made the remarks at a rally, organised by the NCP marking International Women’s Day, in front of the Bangladesh National Museum at Shahbagh in the capital protesting at ongoing violence, oppression and cyber harassment against women across the country.

Samanta demanded reforms of relevant laws to ensure women’s safety, along with the safety of all citizens of the state.

She said that the increasing violence against women did not match with the spirit of the July uprising.

Samanta stated that women’s safety was linked to civil security and the security was under threat in the country.

‘Attempts are being made after the uprising to deny the role they played in the uprising,’ said Samanta.

Initiatives must be taken by all, including political parties and the state, to ensure women’s safety, opportunities and leadership, said Samanta.

‘We want to see the proposals of women’s affairs reform commission soon, and at the same time, we want to see the proposals of political parties openly to know about their thoughts about women. They have to clarify their positions,’ said Samanta.

NCP chief organiser (North) Sarjis Alam criticised the interim government for failing to ensure women’s safety and security.

NCP joint conveners Nusrat Tabassum, Monira Sharmin, senior joint member secretary Nahida Sarwar Chowdhury and organiser Sadia Farzana, among others, spoke at the rally.
