Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday expressed doubt over whether the interim government was sincere in holding national elections.
He expressed his doubt at a discussion meeting on membership form distribution, membership renewal and the new trend of politics after the mass uprising, organised by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, at the Krishibid Institution auditorium in the capital Dhaka.
Fakhrul said that the local government adviser鈥檚 remark that if fascists sought apology and wished to participate in the elections, they would be permitted to do so was one of reasons for his doubt.
Terming Tuesday鈥檚 remark of the adviser 鈥榙angerous鈥, the BNP secretary general said, 鈥楾his proves that they now want to accommodate the fascists for their own interests.鈥
Fakhrul said that the BNP would welcome any new party, but warned that forming a party with all the government鈥檚 facilities and privileges would never be accepted.
He urged the interim government to take action in this regard, saying that otherwise, it (the government) would lose the people鈥檚 trust.
鈥榊ou have already formed a student organisation, and we welcome it. Whenever you form a political party, we will welcome that too. But that does not mean you can use the privileges of being in power to establish your party. That will never be accepted,鈥 the BNP leader said.
Recently, in an interview with BBC Bangla, Mirza Fakhrul said that if the interim government failed to maintain neutrality, it would not be able to conduct the election. In that case, another neutral government would be required, he told BBC Bangla.
鈥榃hy I said that is now being proven,鈥 the BNP secretary general said.
鈥楾he country is fully prepared to transition from a dreadful fascist regime to a democratic one and that the entire nation desires to return to a democratic environment as soon as possible,鈥 he said.
鈥極ver the past seven months, we have not been able to reach that point. We see that the interim government, which we have supported, is making efforts to complete certain tasks swiftly to move towards the election. But in the meantime, doubts have emerged among public,鈥 Fakhrul said.
