Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman said that Awami League had no chance of returning to power in the forthcoming Bangladesh elections.
Speaking at a member conference organised by the Natore district Jamaat at Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula Government College ground on Friday, he said that some people were questioning whether Awami League would even participate in the elections.
‘Those who do not love and respect the people of this country have no election in their fate.’
He also said that Awami League added over 1.5 crore fake voters to the electoral list over the past 15 years.
The Jamaat chief went on to condemn the past elections, saying that Awami League had held three elections through cruelty, adding, ‘What elections for those who do not believe in elections?’
He also called on the government to implement urgent reforms and hold free and fair elections, allowing the people to choose their representatives through voting. ‘The people will elect those they like.’
The Jamaat leader said that political leaders who had held power since the country’s independence had betrayed the trust of the people to varying degrees, including Awami League which had caused the most harm to citizens.
He said that Jamaat-e-Islami wanted foreign friends, not masters.
Natore district Jamaat amir Mir Nurul Islam presided over the meeting, where leaders from various levels, including the party’s central assistant secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan, spoke.
Meanwhile, speaking at an event at the Natore district council auditorium, the Jamaat chief said that excluding fake voters would significantly reduce the total number of voters.
He mentioned that there were around 11 crore voters in the country then, but many eligible young men and women had not been included in the voter list. If they were registered, the voter count would increase even further.
He emphasised the need for necessary reforms to address the issue.
The Jamaat amir also remarked that the chief adviser had provided a direction for the next election, a move Jamaat did not view as unreasonable.
However, he stressed the importance of sincerity in implementing reforms, warning against delays in addressing the fundamental issues.
Shafiqur Rahman urged for a determined approach to ensure that these reforms were not derailed by any conspiracy.
The event was chaired by the Natore district Jamaat amir, with speeches from Mir Nurul Islam and other central and district leaders of the party.
