A Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal leader was injured after he was shot in a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party allegedly over extortions in Noakhali’s Sonaimuri on Monday.

The injured, Halim, 40, was the member secretary candidate of Amishapara Union Juba Dal.

According to local people, Firoz and his people blocked auto-rickshaw driver Hossain on Sunday and falsely accused him of a scandal demanding a ransom.

Hossain was released on the condition of paying the ramsom.

After knowing the matter, local people asked Hossain not to pay the ramsom.

Following the incident, local Shanto and his men beat up Firoz on Sunday night and vandalised Firoz’s house on Monday noon.

Later, Firoz and his men attacked Shanto group where victim Halim was injured after being shot during the clash on Monday evening.

Halim’s brother Abdul Hannan, however, denied that Shanto group attacked the Firoz group and said that local people along with Shanto went there to prevent extortion.

Sonaimuri police officer-in-charge Mohammad Morshed Alam said that the injured was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.

‘We primarily assume that the clash took place over establishing supremacy. Perpetrators fled the scene immediately after the incident,’ he said, adding that investigation is going on to arrest those involved in the incident.
