Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Tuesday warned that that even though the dictator had fled, their conspiracy continued.

The warning came while Tarique was virtually addressing a training workshop on the party’s 31-point programme for repairing the state and public involvement organised by the party’s Sylhet divisional unit at Sylhet Shilpakala Academy.

‘Students gave their lives for democracy. Therefore, if democracy is sustained, accountability will be ensured. The country will move forward if the right to vote is ensured,’ he said.

‘Dictator has fled but their tails remain... everyone should be on guard against conspiracies,’ Tarique said, adding, ‘If BNP is damaged, the country will be damaged.’

People were looking at the BNP, Tarique said.

‘We may not have been able to do everything in the past when we were in power. However, personal freedom, freedom of speech is somewhat safe with the BNP,’ he said.

He said that if the party was voted to power in the future, it might not be able to do everything, but it could do good things.

‘People are looking to the BNP because they have this much faith. People trust the BNP,’ he said.

He urged the party leaders and activists to fulfil their duties for the sake of the country, people and democracy.

The day-long workshop was held with BNP central organising secretary GK Gauch in chair.

In Dhaka city, meanwhile, addressing the launching ceremony of a book titled ‘Tarique Rahman: politics and policies—contemporary Bangladesh’ written by journalist Mohammad Zainal Abedin at a hotel, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the hidden enemies of the country were trying to destabilise the country.

‘Bangladesh’s enemies, who have moved behind, are destabilising the country again. We have to remain vigilant,’ he said.

Urging everyone’s patience, he said, ‘All should be patient. This government needs cooperation. Because if this government fails, the uprising will fail and we will go back to that darkness.’

Expressing concern over the attack on the media, he said ‘We have fought for the freedom of speech. Today, we see some stubborn people trying to disrupt the freedom of the press. It should not be accepted by conscious and patriotic people.’

Emphasising the importance of holding elections, Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘It is not possible to deal with such problems without elections. Only an elected government can solve these problems.’
