Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said that fallen prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina was still scheming against the interim government.
‘Fascist Sheikh Hasina is hatching plots to bring down the country’s interim government. Everyone in Bangladesh should be alert to stop their [Awami League] conspiracy,’ Tarique said at a discussion organised by his party at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on the occasion of ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ observed on November 7.
He said that time had yet been ripe for evaluating the work or talking about the success of the interim government led by chief adviser professor Muhammad Yunus as the government would merely pass three months after it assumed office on August 8 following ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami regime on August 5.
‘The interim government is going to finish just three months in office in a day. These three months are not enough to discuss their success,’ he said.
Tarique joined the discussion virtually from London.
While saying that it was good for every leader and activist to have the confidence about achieving victory, he cautioned against becoming too confident to become distanced from people.Â
‘Avoid doing things that people don’t like. Earn the trust and love of people,’ he urged party leaders and activists.
At the discussion, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that November 7 was a historic day to protect the history of independence and sovereignty.
BNP founder Ziaur Rahman laid the foundation of the country’s development, he said, adding that party chairperson Khaleda Zia led the party to power by bringing down the then dictatorship through realising Ziaur Rahman’s vision.
‘We are free from fascism, but we have to look to the future. We respect and trust Muhammad Yunus. He will bring back democracy through elections as soon as possible,’ Fakhrul said.
Party standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said that the significance of November 7 was crucial for the nation, but BNP could not observe it for 17 years.
Another standing committee member Mirza Abbas said that the Zia family led the country during all the crises.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, also party standing committee member, said that fascist Sheikh Hasina has fled but a level playing field had yet to be created in the country.
‘If democracy and the ownership of the country are to be returned to the people, elections must be held soon,’ he stressed.
Among other BNP standing committee members, Nazrul Islam Khan, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and AZM Zahid Hossain, also spoke at the programme.
