The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday alleged that the Awami League was still conspiring to destroy democracy in Bangladesh.

The party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, made the allegation at a discussion organised by the Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal, the women’s wing of the BNP, at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

‘Awami League has destroyed the country’s politics and economy as well as democracy in the past 15 years. They are once again plotting to destroy democracy. Everyone should be careful about this,’ he said.

The BNP leader said that anti-democratic elements were trying to raise their heads again.

They should not be allowed to succeed and the BNP should be careful about that, he said.

That is why, the BNP is urging the interim government to hold the election quickly, the BNP leader said.

‘We hope that the interim government will quickly complete necessary reforms and hold elections as the election is the door of democracy,’ he said.

Fakhrul said that the messes created by the ousted prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina should be removed and elections should be held quickly.

‘An elected government is the best government as people elect them. And, an elected government is the biggest gate of reforms,’ he said.

Stating that Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, the BNP leader said that the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also fled to Pakistan before the 1971 Liberation War.

Advising the party leaders and activists to proceed cautiously, he alleged that the AL government had smuggled one crore billion dollars out of the country in the past 15 years.

‘We will build the state through elections taking the people of the country with us,’ he said.

Addressing a separate programme at the Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas urged the interim government to let the nation know clearly when they wanted to hold the elections.

‘The situation in the country is a bit confusing. I think the situation is going to get worse. We want to believe that the interim government will raise hope for the nation,’ he said.
