Former shipping minister Shajahan Khan was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as he fell ill during interrogation at the Detective Branch office on Monday afternoon.

Shahjahan fell ill during the interrogation at the DB office. He was taken to One Stop Emergency Centre at DMCH’s emergency department, where he received first aid, said Jatrabari police station sub-inspector Md Mojahid.

Following initial aid, an ECG and other tests were conducted and later, he was admitted to the Coronary Care Unit of the cardiology department of the hospital for further observation.

Shahjahan Khan, also an Awami League presidium member, was arrested on September 5.

He was later shown arrested in several cases, including crimes against humanity at International Crimes Tribunal and murders committed during the student-led mass uprising that forced Sheikh Hasina to resign as prime minister and flee the country on August 5.

On October 27, the ICT ordered jail authorities to produce 14 political leaders, including Shahjahan, a retired Supreme Court judge, five former police officers, and a sacked army officer before it.

The former Madaripur-2 lawmaker is also the acting president of the Bangladesh Workers Federation.

He was elected a parliament member contesting the poll as an independent candidate in 1986 for the first time from the Madaripur-2 constituency.

Later, he was elected MP from the same constituency with AL nomination in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024.
