Two metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on Friday placed former food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder and Awami League鈥檚 farmer wing Bangladesh Krishak League president Samir Chandra on remand in separate cases.

The police, on the other hand, arrested a former AL lawmaker for Jashore Sadar constituency, Shahidul Islam Milon, at Phulbaria in the capital鈥檚 Gulistan area in a case over attacking students during the recent anti-quota protests, while a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka sent former lawmaker for Khulna-4 constituency, Abdus Salam Murshedy, to jail in a murder case.


Court officials said that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saifuddin Hossain on Friday placed Sadhan on a seven-day remand in a case lodged over the murder of Daffodil International University student Ramij Uddin Rup in the capital鈥檚 Karwan Bazar area during the anti-discrimination student movement.

A team of detective branch of police arrested Sadhan at the capital鈥檚 Bashundhara residential area on October 3.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza on Friday allowed the police to take Bangladesh Krishak League president Samir Chandra on a three-day remand in a case lodged over the murder of Dulal Sardar during the student-led mass uprising.

Samir was arrested at the city鈥檚 Badda area Friday morning.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police鈥檚 deputy commissioner for media, Talibur Rahman, said that the DMP鈥檚 detective branch arrested a former AL lawmaker for Jashore Sadar constituency, Shahidul Islam Milon, at Phulbaria in the capital鈥檚 Gulistan area Thursday afternoon.

He said that Milon, also a freedom fighter and the president of the Jashore district unit of AL, was accused in several cases of attacking students and people during the anti-quota movement and taken to Gulshan police station.

Court officials said that Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuddin Hossain sent former lawmaker Abdus Salam Murshedy to jail in a case lodged over the killing of garment worker Rubel during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

The court passed the order as the police produced Murshedy, also a former senior vice-president of the Bangladesh Football Federation, before the court after ending his two-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of the probe in the case.

Rapid Action Battalion arrested Murshedy at the city鈥檚 Bashundhara on October 1.

The police said that they arrested two suspects, former DSCC ward councilor Azizul Haque and Awami Swechhasebak League leader Obaidul Islam Rana, at a location in the capital鈥檚 Khilgaon area Thursday evening over the killing of a grocery shop worker, Mizanur Rahman, on July 19.

Besides, AL Uttara West Thana unit president advocate Monowar Islam Chowdhury Robin was arrested at his home in Uttara in Dhaka on Friday.

He was arrested on charges of playing a strong role in suppressing the anti-quota movement, according to a statement issued by DMP.
