Poet and thinker Farhad Mazhar said on Tuesday that the present interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus appeared to be similar to the 1/11 government backed by the military.
He also said that there had been a regime change but it was orchestrated by the United States.
He made these remarks at a seminar titled ‘Our Independence: Our Map,’ organised by Sangskaar Sangha at the RC Majumdar auditorium at Dhaka University.
Mazhar said that those who had been sworn in to protect the constitution did not have the authority to reform it.
He said that it was interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’ responsibility to engage in dialogue with people, not to seek support from Joe Biden.
Biden is known as ‘Genocide Joe’ in the USA, added Mazhar.
‘One may pay a visit to him, but it becomes problematic when Biden kisses you and presents you as his favourite,’ said Mazhar.
Referring to the recent incidents of vandalising shrines, Mazhar stated that it was part of an Israeli propaganda, a conspiracy to erase the history of Islam.
He said that vandalising shrines was not in line with Islam.
He also said that maps were created during colonial times.
Most of the people think that maps are eternal, but the concept of maps is directly linked to colonial ideas, Mazhar said, adding that the problem lies in how people have started to accept this map as the truth.
He also said that Bengali nationalism had taken a fascist turn.
When identity politics claims that only one’s own identity is true, it turns into fascism, he added.
Criticising the announcement of the army chief regarding the election schedule, Mazhar said, ‘He [the army chief] has announced the probable election time, but he can hardly say whether the Awami League will participate in that election.’
Historian and researcher Mohammad Ashraful Islam delivered a written keynote speech at the event.
The other speakers at the seminar included writer, political and security analyst retired Colonel Mohammad Abdul Haque, Manarat International University vice-chancellor Abdur Rob, and DU international business department professor Chowdhury Saima Ferdous.
