The Socialist Party of Bangladesh on Thursday submitted a memorandum with seven demands, including effective measures for dengue prevention, to the administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation.

Prior to submitting the memorandum, the SPB organised a rally in front of the National Press Club.

The rally was presided over by its Dhaka city unit in-charge, Nikhil Das, said a press release.

The speakers said that due to the lack of effective measures by the city corporations for dengue prevention, the number of cases and deaths increased in August and September.

Citing media reports, they said that no mosquito repellent was sprayed in any of the city corporation’s wards in a month and a half, leading to 119 deaths nationwide by September 18, with highest 79 of those occurring in the DSCC.

Their other demands included eliminating breeding grounds of dengue mosquitoes, enhancing public awareness, and taking special initiatives to provide free dengue testing and treatment for the affected individuals.

They also demanded a thorough investigation and justice regarding the city corporations’ previous controversial actions, corruption, theft, and fraud related to mosquito and dengue prevention.
