
Deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her associates, including high-ranking party members and police officials, face three new cases of genocide and crimes against humanity linked to the killings during the student-led uprising, bringing the total to 127.
Hasina and her cronies face 24 cases of genocide and crimes against humanity charges, besides 103 other criminal cases, majority of which are on murder charges.
The criminal cases have been filed with various police stations and courts nationwide over the killing of students and others related to the movement between July 19 and August 5.
On Tuesday, three new charges of genocide and crimes against humanity were filed against Hasina and 108 of her associates, related to the killing of two students鈥擬ohammad Sabbir Islam in Sector 7, Uttara, on July 19, and Mohammad Hayatullah near the Ansar-VDP Camp in Shafipur, Gazipur, on August 5鈥攁nd injuring Mohammad Mominul Islam Marjan in Kishoreganj on July 18.
The families of Sabbir and Hayatullah lodged separate complaints with the International Crimes Tribunal, accusing the police of firing at the students, while Marjan himself filed a complaint for injuries sustained during the same police firing.
The incidents occurred during the student-led uprising that ultimately toppled the Awami League government, forcing Hasina to flee to India on August 5.
All the 110 individuals named as accused in the three complaints are almost the same, according to the complaint documents.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, ICT chief prosecutor Md Tajul Islam stressed the urgent need to establish the tribunal with the immediate appointment of three judges.
He said that the prosecution is currently unable to file a petition seeking arrest warrants for the accused in the complaints lodged with the tribunal.
