
Politicians, academics and professionals said on Saturday that without proper electoral reforms it would not be possible to hold any free, fair and credible elections.
For holding a free, fair and credible general election, a credible Election Commission is a must, they said at a discussion held at the National Press Club on the issue of free and fair elections.
Bangladesh Congress organised the discussion where former chief Election Commissioner Justice Abdur Rouf said that without introduction of proportionate voting system it would not be possible to hold a credible general election in the country.
The voters would cast their votes in favour of the political parties, not any candidate and after the votes political parties would fix their representatives according to the ratio of votes they get, Abdur Rouf said.
Gonoforum faction general secretary Subrata Chowdhury said that it was prime responsibility of the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus, to hold a credible general election for democratic transition of the country.
The interim government already formed a commission for reforms of the Election Commission and hoped that the commission would form a credible body within a justified time for holding a credible general election.
Former vice-chancellor of Potuakhali Science and Technology University Abdul Latif Masum said that the interim government would be able to hold a credible general election after implementing necessary reforms within a justified time.
Bangladesh Jasod general secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan said that the people of the country were eagerly waiting for democratic transition within a justified time.
Chaired by Bangladesh Congress president Kazi Rezaul Hossain, secretary general of the party Mohammad Yearul Islam and others took part in the discussion.
