Shajahan Siraj

Today is the fourth anniversary of death of Shajahan Siraj, a former student leader and one of the key organisers of the War of Independence.

On this day in 2020, he died in Dhaka, at the age of 77 suffering from cancer,   said a press release.


To mark the anniversary, a two-day programme has been taken in Dhaka and at Kalihati in Tangail. 

On behalf of Shajahan Siraj Welfare Trust, wreaths will be placed on his grave at Banani graveyard in Dhaka in the morning.

Qur’an khwani and a food distribution programme will be held at orphanages run by Anjuman Mufidul Islam.

At Kalihati, the day’s programme will begin with placing wreaths at the mural of the deceased.

Besides, scholarships will be given to poor and meritorious students at Shajahan Siraj College in Kalihati.

Besides, a dua mahfil, Qur’an khwani and special prayers will also be held at mosques in the upazila after jumma prayers.

Prayers will also be offered at local mosques and temples.

Shajahan Siraj, a veteran politician, read out the manifesto of the country’s independence in Paltan Maidan in the presence of millions of people on March 3, 1971.

He was also the commander of the Bangladesh Liberation Force.

He was elected lawmaker five times in his 60-year-long political career.

Siraj was one of the key figures of Swadhin Bangla Biplabi Parishad, a secret organisation that was formed by country’s founding president  Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1962 with an aim to liberate the country from then Pakistan.
