Chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Monday said that elections in the country are not being participatory due to a crisis in politics.

‘BNP did not come to the national elections and put the blame on the EC, their complaints were not accepted by the EC,’ he said while talking at an event titled RFED Talk organised by Reporters for Election and Democracy at the EC media centre.

BNP should have proved whether the election was good or bad under the party government by coming to the polls, he said, adding, ‘How can you say good or bad without coming to vote?’

CEC said that this election ended peacefully.

He also said that 36.45 per cent votes were cast in the five phases of the 6th upazila parishad elections. In the last phase, the turnout was 42 per cent.

Out of the country’s 495 upazilas, the elections have been completed in 469 ones.

Earlier on the day, attending a programme of the EC’s Electoral Training Institute, CEC ordered the government to stop harassment and abuse of citizens in providing National Identity Card service. He was also directed to provide services in time.

He said that the NID management is very complex.

‘I don’t care that. When the people come, they should not be late in serving him. I am a government employee. It should be ensured that we do not harass or misbehave,’ he said.
