Leaders of the Ganatantra Mancha, a combine of six political parties, on Wednesday at a rally in Dhaka demanded action against corruption.

They said that the ruling Awami League government was engulfed in corruption and patronising corrupt people.

Referring to issues of earning huge properties through corruption by former army chief Aziz Ahmed and former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed, they demanded their immediate arrest and trial for misusing power.

The Mancha organised the rally in front of the National Press Club demanding measures against corrupt people where Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon chaired.

Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the Awami League government had introduced misrule in the country and at the same time they were patronising corrupt officials and the looters.

He demanded immediate arrest of former army chief Aziz Ahmed and former police chief Benazir Ahmed for accumulating huge wealth misusing their power and posts.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that most of the people of the country rejected the one-sided general election held on January 7.

The Awami League has no moral right to remain in power, he added.

He called on the government to resign from power giving a participatory general election, where people would be able to cast their votes.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki called on opposition political parties to wage movements against the government to compel it to resign from power.

‘We will wage a mass movement against the government so that they will be bound to resign from power and will hold a participatory general election,’ Saki said.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu demanded immediate arrest of four lawmakers of the Awami League involved in the scam of sending workers to Malaysia.

He said that a huge number of people were suffering for not going to the country.

Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum said that they would bring about huge reforms in the constitution for introducing good governance in the country.

Central leader of Ganosamhati Bachchu Bhuiyan conducted the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
