Speakers, including educationists, journalists and photographers, on Tuesday, said that the government should take photography as a serious educational tool in the era of digital communication and the fourth industrial revolution.

They also said that photographers and journalists published evidence of mass killings by the ousted Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on different platforms, which will be used as important documents of the 2024 July mass uprising.

They made the remarks at a discussion organised by the Bangladesh Photographic Society in association with sixty photography organisations of the country to mark World Photography Day 2025 at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Photographers, including Shahidul Alam, Snigdha Zaman, Imtiaz Alam Beg and BPS standing committee member Nasir Mahmud, among others, spoke at the event moderated by cultural activist Shankar Shawjal.

Shahidul Alam said that the ousted AL government tried to deny the mass killings, but photographers and socio-political activists published evidence of the bloodshed on different platforms, which ensured the fall of the Hasina-led fascist government.

‘The government should recognise the bravery of the photographers and mass people who raised their voices to share evidence of mass killings,’ Shahidul said, adding that the government should take photography as a serious education tool in the new communication era.

Snigdha Zaman said that the government and organisations should focus on the work environment for women photographers and journalists.

The event also comprised dance performances, folk songs, performance art and a rally which ended at the base of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on Dhaka University campus.

Pathshala South Asian Media Institute has organised two photography exhibitions to mark the day at the DrikPath Bhobon at Panthapath in the capital.

Besides, Bangladesh Photojournalist Association organised a rally to mark the day.

World Photography Day is celebrated on August 19 to commemorate the invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Louis Daguerre in 1837, which was officially announced by the French government as a gift to the world on August 19, 1839.
