Satirical cartoon exhibition titled ‘Bidrupe Bidroho’ marking the fall of the authoritarian Sheikh Hasina regime is under way at the La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka at Dhanmondi in the capital.
Organised by Earki, a popular satire platform, the six-day exhibition began on July 31.
Celebrating the first anniversary of the 36-day mass uprising of July 2024, the exhibition is exploring satire as a potent form of political resistance.
With some interacting games, including ludu, roulette, puzzle and claw clamp, the exhibition comprises memes, cartoons, puppets, installation and animation which were created during the July uprising and published in different newspapers, magazines, web sites and social media to support the uprising.
Most of the installations comprised speeches and dialogues of Sheikh Hasina delivered in different situations to manage the crisis creating controversies and a comical atmosphere.
Besides, the exhibition portrays the internet shutdown, ‘Haruner Bhater Hotel’ and viral social media contents during the students-led mass uprising at the exhibition which has been curated by ASM Rezaur Rahman.
A puzzle titled ‘Ei Amar Bangladesh’ comprised many contemporary slogans mostly collected from post-uprising graffiti reflecting the aspirations of the people.
‘Satire has always been a weapon of the marginalised — a way to laugh at power and expose its absurdities. This exhibition is a tribute to those who spoke truth to power with courage and wit, even in the darkest times,’ read the curatorial note.
The exhibition will end on August 5.
