Contemporary visual artists are exploring independent expression going beyond the existing trend in a group art exhibition titled ‘Aesthete’, which is under way at Alliance Française de Dhaka at Dhanmondi in the capital.

The exhibition, which was inaugurated on July 8, will end today.

Instead of any trend or spectacle, this nine-day exhibition aims to express artists’ independent thoughts along with creating dialogue on contemporary issues that they are experiencing.

The show is displaying 33 artworks of 28 artists, including paintings, drawings and sculptures that portray the beauty of nature, culture and contemporary life through diverse styles such as realism, expressionism and abstraction.

Artworks by Bangladeshi artists, including Abdus Sattar Toufiq, Nazia Ahmed, SM Saha Anisuzzaman, Abdullah Al Bashir, Al-Akhir Sarker, Anukul Chandra Mojumder and Bishwajit Goswami, are put on display in the exhibition.

Abdus Sattar Toufiq’s acrylic on canvas titled ‘Homage to Labouring People’ shows the struggle of working people while Al-Akhir Sarker’s artwork titled ‘Shamshir’ depicts two Persian soldiers carrying their traditional swords.

Bishwajit Goswami’s mixed media sculpture titled ‘Porichoy’ shows the domination of technologies on traditional culture while Nazia Ahmed’s oil on canvas titled ‘Blissful Solitude’ portrays human relationship.

A bronze and iron-made sculpture titled ‘Orchid on Elephant’s Trunk’ by artist SM Saha Anisuzzaman shows beautiful natural forms and shapes.

‘The exhibition focuses on creating dialogues between audience and artists about contemporary issues,’ said Monjur Rashid, an organiser of the exhibition, adding that through art practice, they wanted to create an introspection among contemporary artists.

As a part of the exhibition, a talk was held at the venue on Tuesday. Artist professor Mohammed Eunus and artist-writer Rafi Haque participated in the event.
