Loneliness, silence, tranquillity in nature and trauma inflicted by time recur as themes in the work of Mahmudur Rahman Dipon who has his third solo going on in Dhaka city now.

Titled ‘The Moments’, the exhibition, underway at Gallery Bhumi at Lalmatia,  features 54 artworks, mostly done with charcoal, pastel, acrylic and watercolour on paper, while a few are acrylic on canvas paintings.

Dipon is popular for his charcoal drawings of melancholy and, in contrast, also for his pastel and acrylic-based colourful rendering of urban chaos and nightscape on one hand, while on the other, for his watercolours of nature’s beauty. His melancholic still lifes have also attracted fond appreciation.

‘Tired Icarus’, a charcoal on paper, is one of the most worth-mentioning of the ongoing show, in which the Greek mythical character recurs in desolation with wings rolled up in a dark chamber.

‘Solitary’ strives to flow a tranquil river with a woman in bath in charcoal. A white duck swims beside the serene figure.

‘Night in the city of colours’ enliven bright nightly cityscape in pastel on paper, while also depicts dejected sleepless nights that city life brings. ‘Evening in the hills’, in contrast, transports the silent radiance of an evening sky to vibrant watercolour.

The 12-day exhibition was opened by Dhaka University professor emeritus and eminent artist Rafiqun Nabi on July 4. The show will end today.
