
A group exhibition that opened in Dhaka city on July 4 features the works of eminent artists Qayyum Chowdhury, Shahabuddin Ahmed, Kalidas Karmakar, Monirul Islam, Rafiqun Nabi, Biren Shome and Kanak Chanpa Chakma, among others.
The 10-day show titled ‘Minal’s Collection-2’, under way at Gallery Illusions in Lalmatia, presents a curated collection from the treasures of Minal Mondol, a picture framer by occupation, who has turned art enthusiast and collector.
Featuring mostly paintings, the exhibition presents 88 artworks by 75 artists Minal collected from 1998 to 2025. The show also includes a painting by Minal himself carried out in mixed media.
Charcoal, oil, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media have mostly been used for the paintings displayed, while printmaking media has been used for some.
Currently an owner of a frame making shop, Minal Mondol started working as a picture framer at Shilpangan art gallery in 1995. He by now possesses a trove of more than a 1,000 works of local artists many of whom were young talents at the time of his purchase. Their communication began as they came to him for framing their work.  Â
‘When I started making picture frames for artworks, I had also discovered my love for art. Besides collecting artworks, I have also made my attempt to create art. I hope to have an exhibition of my work soon,’ Minal said, adding that he wanted to build an art museum in his ancestral village in Faridpur.
The exhibition was inaugurated by artist Monirul Islam, Biren Shome and art critic Moinuddin Khaled. The show will end on July13.
