
Jalkanya, a women’s platform, organised a six-day group art exhibition titled Hills and Life in the Hills, celebrating International Mother’s Day, inaugurated at the Safiuddin Shilpalay of Dhanmondi in Dhaka on Sunday.
The ninth exhibition of the platform, Hills and Life in the Hills is featuring 33 artworks created on watercolour as well as acrylic and mixed media by 12 artists, said a press release on Monday.
Sponsored by City Bank PLC and curated by artist Ashok Karmakar, the artworks of Suparna Alice Gomez, Azadi Parveen, Sabia Nasrin, Elina Chakma, Tereza Isha Gomez, Flora Urmila Rodrick, Jacqueline Ria Rosario, Maleka Sultana Nupur, Shama Sayom, Mahi Farhana, Aparna Tarapadar Mou and Saria Mehsa are being displayed in the exhibition.
Artist and Dhaka University supernumerary professor Farida Zaman and actress Chitralekha Guha jointly inaugurated the exhibition.
Hosted and moderated by Jalkanya founder Suparna Alice Gomez, the opening ceremony of the exhibition also featured a cultural programme on the occasion of Mother’s Day.
The programme began with poetry recitation, patriotic songs and hill songs. Poetry was recited by Mahi Farhana and Nishat Jasmine, patriotic songs were performed by Swapna Bernadette Francis and Mahbuba Sultana, and hill songs were performed by Elina Chakma.
Chitralekha Guha said, ‘It is very difficult to fulfil the duties of a mother while working as an actress. I had to perform on stage even after leaving my sick child in the green room. And I had to do it perfectly. No one understood that my child was sick.’
Professor Farida Zaman said, ‘As mothers, we have to move forward from many difficult places. I did not study with the desire to become an artist. But I have built a career as an artist. I have raised my children in my own hands.’
The exhibition will end on Friday.
