
Poet, teachers and researchers said on Friday that sculptor Novera Ahmed was one of the pioneers of modern sculpture in the country but her works were not researched after the War of Independence.
They also said that after the student-led mass uprising artists should think about the relationship between arts and people because people created arts during the protest to raise their voices against fascism. Â
They made the statement at a seminar at the national art gallery auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital.
At the event, poet Shakhawat Tipu presented his keynote paper titled Bhaskarja: Adhunikotar Prathomik Parba O Noverar Uthhan.
Researcher Rezaul Karim Sumon and Dhaka University’s department of oriental art teacher Dipti Rani Datta spoke on the paper while the BSA fine arts department director Mustafa Zaman delivered a welcome speech at the event which was chaired by the BSA director general Syed Jamil Ahmed.
Shakhawat Tipu said that sculptor Novera Ahmed was celebrated for her modern approach in the art arena in mid-60s in the sub-continent.
‘Her figurative sculpture in cement and plaster titled Child Philosopher depicted Gautama Buddha through geometrical form won the President Award in 1961,’ said Shakhawat Tipu.
Rezaul Karim Sumon said that after the War of Independence a lot of national art exhibitions and sculpture exhibitions were held, but sculptor Novera Ahmed was not focused by researchers.
Dipti Rani Datta said that artists should rethink the relations between arts and people because during the student-led uprising protesters used artworks to raise their voices against fascism. Â Â
‘Now it’s an important question how artists face challenges after the student-led mass uprising where the shrines are being attacked in the name of Islam,’ said Syed Jamil Ahmed.
The event also organised another seminar titled Bhaskorjo: Samprotik Nirman O Binirman which written by researcher Imam Hossain Sumon.
