
The sixth National Sculpture Exhibition featuring more than 200 selected sculptures by 150 sculptors from across the country began at National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Saturday.
Organised by the BSA Fine Arts department, 13 sculptors won awards for their works in two categories at the inauguration ceremony of the exhibition held at the auditorium of the gallery.
Artist Azharul Islam Sheikh Chanchal won the National Sculpture Award 2024 for his stoneware ceramic titled ‘Vanguard of Civilisation 3’. Abdul Khaleque Chowdhury received the second award for his wood and wood fossils artwork titled Violeted Violence and Bilas Mandal received the third award for his work titled Struggle for Survival created with wood and iron.
Ten other sculptors- Srabonty Meherun, Kanok Kumar Pathak, Habiba Akhter Papia, Syed Tareq Rahman , Asfikur Rahman, Amit Koch, Abu Sawad Md Sohel, Alok Kumar Sarkar, Rupam Roy and Ashim Halder Sagor- won the honourable mention award for their sculptures.
Besides the selected works, 20 sculptures by eminent sculptors of the country including Hamiduzzaman Khan, Mostofa Sharif Anowar, Mukul Kumar Barai, Shahiduzzaman Shilpi, Rezauzzaman Reza, Moynul Islam Paul, Debashis Pal, Nurul Amin and others are also on display at the month-long event.
Women and children affairs ministry adviser Sharmeen S Murshid handed over the awards and inaugurated the exhibition in the presence of director general of the Bengal Foundation Luva Nahid Choudhury, renowned sculptor Hamiduzzaman Khan, faculty at the University of Chittagong sculptor Atiqul Islam, and the BSA Fine Arts department director Mustafa Zaman.
The event was presided over by the BSA director general Syed Jamil Ahmed. Â
The 360 degree virtual reality of the exhibition was also inaugurated at the event.
The exhibition will end on January 20.
