Visual artists Masuda Khatun Jui and Jafrin Gulshan have depicted fragments of surroundings and experiences by displaying artworks at an exhibition titled Embracing Inharmonious under way at the Kalakendra at Lalmatia in Dhaka.
Organised by Kalakendra and curated by Lala Rukh Selim the exhibition comprises 68 artworks mostly watercolour on paper and acrylic on canvas paintings with some installations.
Jafrin Gulshan’s artworks analytically have depicted the experience of motherhood and struggles of women as mothers, wives and humans in the society.
Her drawings, paintings and installations have amplified personal stories in a socio-political perspective.
Her acrylic on canvas titled Chand Mama shows an amulet on a child whose face is parallel to the moon.Â
Another acrylic on canvas titled No Turning Back shows a woman with many hands symbolising responsibility and workloads of women in a family.
Masuda Khatun Jui’s artworks widely have portrayed her surroundings with regular thoughts.
Regular patterns of clothing such as saris, shirts and lungis, common shapes like sacks and packages tied with ropes and in bundles, a display of vegetables and sandals, and textures on damp walls with moss and fern have been depicted in her artworks.
Her watercolour portraits where she overlaps mushrooms on women’s faces replace the metaphor of mushrooms growing on old objects.Â
A watercolour on paper titled Untitled 12 shows a family photo while the woman’s body is covered with mushrooms.
An installation titled Life 1 shows packages of variable sizes tied with rope and hanging from a rack which symbolise the quantity and emotion of human clothing.
The twenty-day exhibition was inaugurated on Friday.
The duet exhibition will end on October 15. Â
