Renowned cartoonist Mehedi Haque on Thursday said that cartoons should be simplified and easy to understand instead of text-heavy or detailed because audiences nowadays browse cartoons fast on social media like other posts.

He made the remark in a public lecture on Political Cartoon in Bangladesh: Past, Present and Future organised by the Daily Star at its premises in the capital.

Senior cartoonist of ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Mehedi Haque talked about the language of political cartoons and its nature, ethics, aesthetics and practice in Bangladesh where a few newspapers published cartoons.

‘In the flourish of digital media and social media, cartoons now rapidly relate with contemporary issues and reveal public opinions. Now cartoon is also a good profession for an artist but political cartoon is rarely published in newspapers of Bangladesh,’ he said.

In the open discussion cartoonist Biplob Chakroborty and Raqib Hasan Apu also spoke to the audience of the event.

‘Cartoon is a reactive art form. I collect information from various sources including newspapers, talk shows and other dependable sources. Artistic expression of cartoonists depends on continued practice and education,’ said Raqib Hasan Apu.

The audience also drew some political cartoons based on contemporary issues like hilsa export, water logging and prolonged under-construction works of the city.            Â
