Visual artist Uttam Kumar Roy has attempted to portray the degradation of moral values caused by the power structure and mental agony in his solo art exhibition under way at the Alliance Fran莽aise de Dhaka at Dhanmondi in the capital.聽

鈥業n my artworks, I have tried to portray the degradation of moral values caused by the power structure.聽 I would like to say that by creating artworks, I seek redemption from those dire situations as these take toll on my mental health,鈥 Uttam Kumar Roy told 抖阴精品.


The exhibition titled The Actuality of Fiction has been curated by artist and poet Mustafa Zaman.

鈥楿ttam Kumar Roy, whose works with their fluid application of colours and figural motifs, often running like a watercolour caught in a whirlwind or an explosion, chooses to make art that sees life as reality understood through fictive imagination,鈥 Mustafa Zaman wrote.

The exhibition is featuring 54 artworks and two series created with acrylic and mixed media on canvas and paper between 2017 and 2024.

It is also featuring four sculptures created with paper mash and mixed media.

The artist said, 鈥業f as an artist I exist amid the ebb and flow of life, they propel my artistic 鈥渟elf鈥 to find its voices in many different ways.鈥

聽He also added that he kept returning to the core of his existence while he was overwhelmed with the psychological complexities.

鈥楾he inconsistency in the society I experience, I have tried to portray them into artwork,鈥 the artist mentioned, stressing, 鈥榃e need to be free from the exploitation.鈥

The paintings of the exhibition have come into semi-transparent layers of colour on canvas and paper with green, blue and black colour schemes juxtaposed with human and animal figures with perception.

His acrylic on canvas series titled Hunger and Full Moon shows nine oval-burnt breads that look like moon inspired by Sukanta Bhattacharya-written poem titled 鈥楬ey Mahajiban鈥.聽

Graduated in 2001 from the Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts in drawing and painting, Uttam Kumar Roy currently works as a teacher at the BAFA.

The artist has exhibited his artworks in 11 solo and many group art exhibitions. He bagged the Best Award at the National Art Exhibition organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2017 and 2007.聽

Inaugurated by veteran artist Monirul Islam on July 5, senior artists Alak Roy and Mohammad Eunus and secretary of the BAFA Md Fazlur Rahman were present on the opening ceremony of the exhibition as special guests.

The exhibition will end on July 16.
