Cultural activists said on Wednesday that following the 2024 student-led mass uprising, cultural activities were needed to build an inclusive and discrimination-free society.

They made the remarks at a seminar on the uprising, organised by Ganatantik Sanskritic Oikkya to mark the first anniversary of the uprising at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital Dhaka.

Cultural activist Zakir Hossain presented the keynote paper while the seminar was chaired by Mofijur Rahman Laltu, coordinator of the platform.

The seminar was attended by cultural activists, political leaders and social activists.

Zakir said that the student-led mass uprising was participated by diverse sections of people for an inclusive and discrimination-free society.

‘After the mass uprising, many right wing political parties are attempting to break the unity of mass people who fought against fascism and discrimination,’ he said.

Abu Sayeed Khan said that cultural activists needed to properly judge all the historical events to keep unity, otherwise the uprising would confuse people and vested right wing political parties would cash on this ‘revolution’.

Anu Muhammad said that during the ousted Awami League regime, only a few cultural activists were able to create a cultural movement against fascism.

‘The uprising was a creative fight where cultural activities and online activities created new cultural movements,' Anu said, adding that the government should free all the public and cultural venues where the army was stationed during the student-led mass uprising.

He also said that after the mass uprising, not only the national and religious minorities but also the diversities of Islam were attacked, which stressed the need for an inclusive state.

‘We need to focus on cultural movement to form an anti-discrimination and anti-fascism society and state,’ he added.
