
Cultural organisations on Sunday urged the government to stop felling trees in the name of development at Barsha Utsab, a festival to welcome the Bengali month of Asharh, the first month of the rainy season.
They also said that the government should plan their projects in a way to preserve nature.
Barsha Utsab Udjapan Parishad, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi and Range Bhara Banga organised different colourful programmes under the title ‘Barsha Utsab’ at different venues in the capital.
Barsha Utsab Udjapan Parishad welcomed Asharh organising a programme that featured a discussion and cultural performances.
The event began with an instrumental performance by young sitarist Sohini Majumder programme on the fine arts faculty premises of Dhaka University at 7:30am.
Barsha Utsab Udjapan Parishad general secretary Manzarul Islam Chowdhury Sweet delivered the welcome speech and Bangladesh Ganasangeet Samannay Parishad president Mizanur Rahman spoke at the programme presided over by Nigar Chowdhury.
Renowned singers including Yasmin Mushtari, Salauddin Ahmed, Anima Roy, Ferdousi Kakali and Navnita Zaid Chowdhury sang solo songs while Naila Tarannum Chowdhury Kakli and Ahsan Ullah Tamal recited poems.
Artistes of Dhriti Nartanaloy, Spandan and Benuka Lalitakakala staged group dance recitals while artistes of Survihar, Shimanta Khelaghar Asar, Bhanishikha, and Satyen Sen Shilpigosthi rendered group songs.
Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi organised a programme at the Bangla Academy at 7:30am.
The artistes of different units of Udichi performed songs, dances and recited poems while Bangladesh Tree Protection Movement coordinator Amirul Rajib spoke at the event.
Amirul Rajib claimed that the interim government did not review any mega projects taken by the ousted Awami League government.
‘The government has also taken many projects that have posed threat to the environment and no political parties have thought about preserving nature,’ said Amirul Rajib.
