Young artistes staged mime productions addressing contemporary issues at a programme held at the Studio Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Saturday.

The mime productions were produced during a five-day workshop organised by the mime troupe Mummers and conducted by mime artiste and director Shahidul Murad from April 30 to May 4 at the rehearsal room of the BSA.

The concluding day of the workshop featured mime shows, a certificate handover ceremony and discussion.

Twenty six participants, divided into four teams, staged four productions at the programme

The mime production titled ‘Lichu Chor’ based on Kazi Nazrul Islam’s work with the same title depicts a boy who wants to steal litchi from a garden and comes across a dog and the gardener.

Another production titled ‘Birpurush’ is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s poem with the same title. It depicts a child imagining saving his mother from dacoits.

The production titled ‘Tom and Jerry’ depicts interactions between siblings in childhood.

Another performance titled ‘Abnormal Life’ shows that technology is not an alternative to social interaction.

Besides, the event featured two solo performances by Shahidul Murad titled ‘Cricket’ and ‘Otondro Prahari’.

‘Cricket’ revolves around a cricket field and ‘Otondro Prohori’ depicts the everyday life of a member of Border Guard Bangladesh.

The event also featured a certificate distribution ceremony.

Mime federation president Zahid Repon, mime artistes Deowan Mamun, Dhiman Saha Jewel and others attended the certificate distribution ceremony.

‘Mime is an important medium in arts. It effectively depicts a message. I hope that the young artistes who have participated in this workshop will become successful mime artistes in future,’ said Shahidul Murad.
