Bangladesh look to secure medals in the forthcoming Islamic Solidarity Games, with 36 athletes set to participate in the sixth edition of the event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 7 to 21 November.

Bangladesh’s 17 male and 19 female athletes will compete in 10 disciplines – athletics, fencing, karate, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, judo, and taekwondo – in the multi-sport events.

About 3,000 athletes from 57 countries are expected to compete in 23 disciplines in the mega sport events of the Islamic world.

Bangladesh took part in the previous two editions in Azerbaijan 2017 and Turkey 2022 and won a total of seven medals - one gold, one silver and one bronze in shooting, two silver and one bronze medal in archery and one bronze in wrestling.

However, shooting and archery are not included this year, which may limit Bangladesh’s chances to extend their medal tally. Nonetheless, Bangladesh is optimistic about winning medals through best efforts.

‘We hope that the athletes will give their highest effort to win some medals,’ said Bangladesh chef de mission and youth and sports ministry’s additional secretary Selim Fakir during a pre-tour press conference at the Bangladesh Olympic Association auditorium on Thursday.

The 62-member Bangladesh contingent will depart for Riyadh on November 3, with the first group of four officials, including chef de mission Selim.

South Asian Games gold medalist weightlifter Mabia Akhter Simanta and table tennis player Muhtasin Ahmed Ridoy will carry Bangladesh’s national flag during the march past of the event.
