Bangladesh are aiming their first medal in the Asian Youth Games to be held in Bahrain‘s capital city, Manama, from October 22 to 31.
A total of 60 athletes from Bangladesh are participating in 13 disciplines – athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball (3x3), cycling, golf, judo, kabaddi, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.
Despite the Games being scheduled to begin on Wednesday, the kabaddi events have already started at the Isa Sports City on Sunday, with Bangladesh boys losing their Group A preliminary round match to India by 83-19 points.
Bangladesh girls’ team also conceded defeat to their Indian counterparts by 46-18 points in their Group A preliminary round match.
After their medal-less campaign in the previous two editions in 2009 and 2013, Bangladesh are looking to end their medal drought, said Brig Gen Md Humayun Kabir, chef de mission of Bangladesh contingent.
‘We are expecting medals from kabaddi. We are expecting good results in golf, weightlifting and wrestling this time,’ Kabir told the media during the press conference at the Bangladesh Olympic Association auditorium on Sunday.
Apart from targeting medals, the other major objective will be giving the opportunity to the young athletes of the country to learn the importance of disciplines through participating in the multi-disciplinary sporting event.
‘Maintaining disciplines will also be in our focus. There will be no anti-disciplinary act. If that happens, disciplinary action will definitely be taken,’ he said.
A total of 8000 athletes from 45 countries or territories enrolled their names to compete in 26 sports disciplines to be held in 20 venues across Manama city.
