
Bangladesh secured bronze in the FIBA Under-16 Asia Cup SABA Qualifiers following a 75-42 victory over hosts Maldives at the Social Centre Indoor Court in Male on Sunday.
In the third-place decider, Sun Mrong top-scored with 24 points, while Mohammad Afridy and Atul Arabi Nehal contributed 16 and three points, respectively, among the Bangladeshi scorers.
The age-level boys’ and girls’ teams from Bangladesh, Maldives, India and Sri Lanka are participating in the five-day tournament, which is scheduled to end today.Â
In the league phase, Bangladesh beat the Maldives by 64-55 points after suffering crushing defeats to Sri Lanka (116-28 points) and to India (117-29 points), respectively.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team conceded defeats in all four games in their maiden appearance in an international tournament.
They lost to Maldives by 17-104, to Sri Lanka by 21-87, and to India 137-13 in the league phase before losing to Maldives by 86-22 points in the third-place decider.
The tournament is organised by the International Basketball Federation in association with the South Asia Basketball Association as part of youth sports development in basketball. Â
