The National Sports Council renamed the Sultana Kamal Women鈥檚 Sports Complex after Riya Gope, a six-year-old martyr female child from the July-August mass uprising, on Sunday.
The site will now be called as the Riya Gope Women鈥檚 Sports Complex, according to an NSC circular signed by secretary Aminul Islam.
Riya was shot on July 26 while playing on the roof of her family鈥檚 four-story building in Narayanganj, and died on July 29 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The NSC also renamed three more sporting facilities as part of the interim government鈥檚 plan to remove the names of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members from various venues.
The Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex has been renamed as the National Roller Skating Complex, the Sheikh Jamal National Tennis Complex will be known as the National Tennis Complex, and NSC鈥檚 Sheikh Kamal Auditorium will be known as the NSC Auditorium.
Earlier in February, the NSC renamed Bangabandhu National Stadium to National Stadium, Dhaka, and renamed 150 upazila mini stadiums after their respective district or city locations, removing the name of Sheikh Russel.
