People from all walks of life paid their last respects to Ekushey Padak-winning Lalon Sangeet exponent Farida Parveen at a mourning ceremony held at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Sunday.

Farida Parveen died at the age of 71 on Saturday night.


The programme was organised by cultural affairs ministry in association with Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritic Sangstha.

Farida Parveen’s body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka at around 11:15am where different socio-cultural organisations, institutions and individuals placed wreaths on her coffin.

Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and cultural affairs adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki expressed deep sorrow and condolence over the death of Farida Parveen.

Cultural affairs ministry, liberation war affairs ministry, Bangladesh Railway, Bangladesh National Museum, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy, Kabi Nazrul Institute, Bangladesh Betar, archaeology department, public libraries department, Udichi Shilpigosthi, Jatiya Kabita Parishad and others paid tributes to Farida Parveen placing flower wreaths on her coffin.

Besides, Liberation war affairs adviser Farooq-e-Azam, music researcher Tapan Bagchi, film actor Ashraf Uddin Ahmed Uzzal, cultural activist Mofidul Haque, cultural activist Shankar Shawjal and filmmaker Kamar Ahmad Simon, among others, paid their last respects to Farida Parveen.

Later, her first namaz-e-janaza was held at the central mosque of Dhaka University after Zuhr prayers.

She was laid to rest at Kushtia municipal graveyard after her second namaz-e-janaza on Sunday night.

Farida Parveen was born at Shawl village under Singra in Natore on December 31, 1954.

She began her professional career by rendering playback songs and Nazrul Sangeet, patriotic songs and modern songs for radio and television.

She founded Ochin Pakhi Sangeet Academy in 2008 at Tejgaon in Dhaka.

Given her outstanding contribution to popularising the Lalon songs, Farida Parveen won various awards, including the Ekushey Padak in 1987, the National Film Award for best female playback singer in 1993 and the Fukuoka Prize from Japan in 2008.
